Hello, I was looking around your website while looking around for information about Jendays. I’m just 13. : )

I’d like to give you some advice for your site, if you don’t mind; I haven’t read through the whole thing, but I’d like to give a few suggestions and tell you about my Jenday, and ask you a few things (there are still a few things I don’t understand…)

I have a Jenday Conure. I’m not sure about the gender (I just think he’s a boy). His name is Valetin and he likes broccoli and apples. He also loves spray millets and likes water.
I wanted to ask if there are any tricks when it comes to “potty-training” a conure? I can imagine it’d be really annoying to always scoop up his droppings from the carpet (I have a carpeted floor) or having stains on my shirt. I’ve put some newspapers on the floor, which I think is kinda ridiculous (haha). So, if you have any advice for that, it’d be very, very appriciated! : )

I also want to know if there’s any trick to earning the conure’s trust or getting him to speak. I’ve only had him for 2-3 weeks and I’ve been told he is 6-7 months old and handfed. I didn’t get him from a breeder, I got him from a PetSmart.
My conure likes to step onto my hand and likes to nip at my chapped lips whenever possible, and he likes to nip at my fingers too. It’s usually just nibbling, but sometimes he’ll bite. So, I want to know if there is some kind of way to make him, I don’t know, more… tame? He is a very nice bird, though, I kid you not.

I’m worried about when he gets too big for his britches, like reaching sexual maturity, for one thing. I don’t really know when “adulthood” for conures is, he’s only 6-7 months, like I said. I don’t know if he’s juvinile or what (I’m only 13, remember, I can hardly figure this kind of stuff out)… So if you can fill me in on that too, that’d be quite nice!

Thank you for your time. : ) Keep working on your website, I’m sure it’ll be useful. ^^

Hi Shelby,
Thanks for your reply. Please never try to potty train your bird. The reason being is you are teaching him to hold his “potty” inside which can cause a bacterial infection and in return cause serious health issues to your sweetie in the long term. Instead consider trying to teach him to poop on demand. Meaning when you take him out of the cage hold him above the cage and offer the same command over and over again. IE “potties” the first few times will be by pure chance that he actually goes when you say it but immediately reward the behavior with his favorite treat. From that point you can time his “out time” according to how long it usually takes before he has to go again.

Hope this helps and good luck!

PS. Have you tried Crazy Corn’s Noodles & Nuts?
