Finding Jenday Conures
The Jenday Conures are a part of the Conure family of birds native to South America. There are the Sun Conures, the Blue-crowned, Green-checked and of course, the Jenday Conures.
Finding Jenday Conures involves going to the right place to purchase them. They should be healthy, well taken care of, and the site should be able to support any questions or problems you may have about them. Contact your Fish and Wildlife commission to make sure this bird is legal in your state. You may need to get a proper permit for this type of species.
The Jenday conure is second in popularity to the Sun conure. It is medium-sized which may make it just right to have at home. It’s not too large, so an extremely large cage is not necessary. These birds have a charming personality, are smart, very affectionate, and very attractive. They’re mostly green, with an orange and yellow head. The head colors only show up on the mature Jenday, so your young bird will have a mottled yellow head until two years old. Their lifespan is on the average to be thirty years, so you can have this wonderful bird for a long time.
Jenday conures love to play and also cuddle with you, so it makes a delightful pet for the whole family. He will get along with everyone in the house, children included. The Jenday can be taught tricks, and can also learn how to talk. However, it isn’t a big talker. He makes up for this by his extreme affection for the family. The Jenday will ride on your shoulder all day if you let him. If a Jenday conure is handfed, they won’t become nippy and will bond well with his family.
The Jenday has a noisy call that may bother someone with very sensitive hearing. However, it shouldn’t disturb the neighbors because it is only moderately loud.
The Jenday should spend a lot of time out of his cage. It would be good to get him a bird friend. The Sun, Gold Capped or Blued Crowned conures would make a good companion, but these birds should not be bred together. They should only be friends.
Jendays are basically very healthy birds. It isn’t hard to keep them that way. They should eat fruits, vegetables, seeds and pellets each day. This is a good heatlhy diet for them. Just like any other animal or person, they can gain too much weight if they’re fed too much or become sedentary. They can get their exercise by having a cage that’s just a bit too big for them. It should be 36″ long, 24″ wide and 24″ high. By having all this space they’ll have room to play and be happy. Confining the Jenday in too small a space can cause self-mutilation and a cranky bird.
The Jenday occupies himself in many ways. Beside loving to be with his human family by riding on their shoulders and cuddling, they love to play. And, they also love to chew. They need wooden toys and branches to chew on. They can also be given items made from acrylic and hard plastic, but the more chewable type of toys are the best. The Jenday would do well to have a play stand and playgym on which to hang rope and toys. Even a swing made of a tough material would be a joy to a Jenday, and keep him fit and active.
Owning a Jenday conure will give you many years of happiness and companionship. Treat the Jenday as one of the family and you will have a new loving member of your family in this beautiful bird.
