Jenday Conure – Pet or Companion?

The Jenday Conure, also known as the Jandaya Parakeet, makes a wonderful pet as well as a loveable companion. They are highly intelligent and can be trained to do tricks and say simple words and phrases. They are a loud bird but can be taught to “tone it down”. They are very playful and sociable and require lots of attention as well as toys to interact with.

The Jenday Conure is a small to medium parrot native to the wooded habitats in northeastern Brazil. They are about 12″ in length. The male will get up to 4.4 oz. and 5 oz. for the female. Their life span is 20 to 25 years.

They are a very beautiful and colorful bird. Their wings and tail are green with blue tips, green back, yellow-orange head/neck/upper chest, orange-red lower back, and white around the eyes.

They are vigorous chewers and can snap cage bars due to their incredible beak strength. It’s important to get the right “home” for them. If they are not to be let out of a cage for extended periods of time, they need a cage large enough to give them room to play such as a 24″x24″x36″ cage. The space between the bars should not be too wide so they don’t get stuck between the bars. They also need enough toys to keep occupied, and they love to climb. They can be very destructive if not watched.

They need a variety of food so they don’t get bored with their meals. Their diet can consist of seeds, crushed nuts, fresh fruits and vegetables, rice, corn, beans, and cooked eggs as well as commercial bird pellet food. Water should be fresh daily. A separate dish for bathing is necessary, or they should be regularly sprayed with water.

A vitamin supplement is only needed if on a strict seed diet. However, they are prone to a vitamin K deficiency and a bleeding disorder. They are also susceptible to respiratory infections, colds and sinus problems, mites, worms, parasites, and beak and feather diseases. However, a well-balanced diet, cleanliness, and regular vet checkups will avoid these problems and insure a healthy pet.

The Jenday Conure usually costs $300 to $400. This is a small price to pay for a bird that will live 20 to 25 years, which is longer than a dog’s life expectancy.
