Jenday Conures Make Great Pets

Jenday Conures are a great species of birds that are both beautiful and friendly. One downfall of having this type of bird is that they are usually pretty noisy. If you are considering purchasing a Jenday you should make sure it is in a different room away from where you want to relax or watch television. However, they do not like to be away from people. This type of bird is very social and requires attention and should not be placed in a room where there is no social activity. An entertained bird is a happy bird. Sometimes owners just want a “quick fix” to a noisy bird. Screaming, squirting them with water, banging on the cage, shaking the bird, or throwing it to the floor is not recommended suggestions. By doing any of this you could end up with a seriously injured bird. Another myth by quieting a bird is covering the cage with a sheet to create a “dark room” which is also not recommended. The bird thinks of this as punishment and can get in a foul mood with their owner if this is done often. This will usually make the bird squawk even louder. Instead of taking a nap like you are hoping the bird will squawk to call out to other birds that he needs help.

Jenday Conures make a great pet for any family however it is not recommended that a young child handles this bird at a young age because the bird needs to be trained first not to bite and nip at people when being handled. This kind of bird requires them to build up trust to you. You will have to handle them often to gain and sustain this trust. An easy way to train them not to nip is to sternly say “No!” as well as blowing on their face at the same time. This will teach them that biting is not an okay thing to do. These types of birds will usually outgrow this after their baby stage. Eventually the bird will enjoy being handled and being taken out of the cage. They will love spending time being social with their owner.

Jendays love to play! They are always up and ready for some sort of entertainment. As previously mentioned, you should be spending time with this pet; you should also make sure they have enough toys to keep them occupied throughout the day. There are many different toys to choose from like bells, stuffed animals, climbing ladders and chew toys. A neat trait about this bird is that you can teach them many words. It is said that Jendays are very happy while they are being taught something new.
Feeding is a very important aspect of owning this pet. There are certain foods that are extremely healthy for the bird as well as foods that you should stay away from. Apples, bananas, broccoli, cantaloupe, cherries, corn, parsley, papaya, plums, lettuce and tomatoes are some great choices that your Jenday will love. You should avoid foods such as: caffeine, chocolate, apple seeds, alcohol, onions, chips, sugar and salt. If followed this list correctly you should have no problems with keeping your bird healthy.
Jenday Conures make great pets that any type of family should consider. By following the guidelines you will have a friendly, healthy and happy pet!
